wry, guarded romanticism
Producer and writer Audrey Wauchope made her directorial debut on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s season 4 episode 2 I Am Ashamed. It was also the directorial debut of Wauchope’s long term writing and producing partner Rachel Specter. Despite support from the network, the other producers, the showrunner, and even though both women advocated for shared directorial credit, the Director’s Guild of America denied them joint credit leaving only Wauchope listed as the credited director.
While the DGA rules were initially created to protect the role of the director and to stop powerful producers and writers from muscling their way into additional credits and royalties the following exposes how the one director rule seems at times arbitrary and punitive. Wauchope and Specter were told that their body of work was not substantial enough to prove their partnership even after the episode had been filmed.
Above you can see that Wauchope and Specter share a joint credit as co-executive producers on the show (every other co-executive producer has an individual credit) but the director credit erases Specter completely.
Can love travel back in time and heal a broken heart? Was it our joined hands that finally lifted Maria’s curse? I’d like to think so. There are some things, though, I know for certain: always throw spilled salt over your left shoulder, keep rosemary by your garden gate, plant lavender for luck, and fall in love whenever you can.

This is excellent commentary on the struggles of being an aging white conservative in this country.
